Training

In 1996, SWEPCO in Shreveport, LA noticed a rise in dog attacks among their many meter readers in the field. Seeking to minimize the likelihood of these attacks, SWEPCO began brainstorming. The concept of using some type of barrier device as dog bite prevention was not new but was seriously studied as a possible solution. The idea of an umbrella being utilized as a barrier between the meter reader and the attacking dog had surfaced and began circulating throughout management. This idea had many skeptics as to being effective and even being used.

Once the decision was made to implement this within the field, it immediately proved its worth when there was a remarkable reduction and virtual elimination of dog bites throughout the company’s meter reading department. Shortly after improvements were made to the design, this equipment soon became mandatory P.P.E. throughout the company and is still required today throughout AEP-SWEPCO. Today’s dog barrier has undergone significant changes and testing since the development of the first prototype 30 years ago. Bite Terminator® seeks to continually make improvements with the equipment that field personnel have trusted for 30 years and we consider ourselves to always be in the research and development stage. Safety is our standard and we believe there is always room for growth and improvement.
